Japan dual citizenship rules

Who Can Have Dual Citizenship in Japan?
Japan permits dual citizenship only under specific circumstances. Children born to parents of different nationalities—when one parent is Japanese—can hold dual citizenship until they reach a certain age. After that, they must choose which nationality to keep.
Adults cannot hold Japanese citizenship alongside another nationality. If you become a Japanese citizen, you must renounce your original citizenship. Japan does not recognize dual citizenship for adults.
Children Born to Mixed-Nationality Parents
If your child has one Japanese parent and one non-Japanese parent, your child automatically receives Japanese citizenship at birth. Your child also has the right to acquire the other parent's citizenship based on that country's laws.
Your child will have a window of time after reaching adulthood to decide which citizenship to keep. During this period, Japanese law allows your child to hold both nationalities temporarily.
The Choice You Must Make
When the deadline arrives, your child must choose one nationality and formally renounce the other. The choice is final. To renounce Japanese citizenship, your child submits paperwork to a Japanese embassy, consulate, or local government office. To keep Japanese citizenship, your child typically takes no action—the other nationality is automatically renounced (depending on the other country's rules).
What Happens If You Don't Choose?
If your child misses the deadline to make a formal choice, Japanese law automatically cancels Japanese citizenship. This is important to track.
Obtaining Japanese Citizenship as an Adult
If you are not born with Japanese citizenship, you can apply for it through naturalization. However, most countries require you to renounce your original nationality before or after becoming Japanese. You cannot hold both.
What You Should Do Now
- Review your child's birth certificate and any citizenship documents
- Contact the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country to confirm your child's situation
- Note important deadlines for your child's citizenship choice
- Keep records of all citizenship paperwork in a safe place
- If considering naturalization, contact Japanese immigration authorities about current requirements
